Cannary

So last tuesday, the 13th, I went to the cannary to fill in for Dad and Nancy until they could get there. The session for canning jam started at 4 and they couldn't get there until 6:30ish becuase of work and the drive from Kanab so they asked me to fill in until they got there. I planned my schedule so I would be able to get there pretty close to 4 but of course I was sunning about 10 minutes late. I was in a hurry and of course all the lights were red on my way there but when I finally got to the Cannary, there was still a line to get in so I was ok. They had me sign in and then just looked at the next person to help them. So I folded to 2 people infron of me and made it to the back of the cannary. I stood there for a couple minutes then some people started taking the lids off the jars for the jam so I started helping them. We would put the ring in one of the bowls and the lid in another bowl and leave the jar in the box. Well, I figured that since we were all going to be stuck together for like 6 hours we might as well talk, but boy was I wrong. The lady I was sitting by was not happy the I was talking so i just did my work in silence. it was boring. I would throw the lids and the ring in opposite bowls to annoy that lady. Haha she would give me the dirtiest look. It was great. I eventually found the happy talkative people and stuck with then for the rest of the night. Our job was to take the jars of Jam out of the Vat, dry them off, tighten the lid, and give it to the people to put in boxes. Well, seeing how I was the youngest at that area I was nominated to get the jars from the bottom of the vat for everyone since their backs were all old and they were short too so they couldn't reach. After a while we had quite the system down. They told me I would be a good pearl diver because of how I would get the jars out. I didn't come back up, I just lifted the jars above my head for them to grab. We were there til a little after 9 but did 11 vats of jams which is a ton of jam. It was so good to be done.

The cannary was kinda fun and a good learning experience and I am glad I was able to go. I learned that the workers are not there to help you, that some people are very serious about their jam and talking and having fun while working just slow's down the process, that cannary is a form of slave labor, and that I would make a good pearl diver. What more could I have asked for?!?

Pearl Diving

Slave labor with a smile. :)

Look they finally came. How cute are they in their hairnets and aprons.

Kendra,
Sounds like you have life figured out. Always look for the happy talkative group and annoy the heck out of the grouchy people!
Way to go!

Good for you! I have only been once and I didn't do jam (it sounds to intense for me) We did potatoes and pudding and apples.
